How to Pick a Memory Foam Pillow Without Trying It First

You cannot squeeze a pillow through a screen. Use your sleep position, the fill type and a few labels to choose well.

Cooling bed sheets and a neck massager arranged on a light background

Buying a pillow online feels like a gamble because the one thing you want to know, how it feels under your head, is the one thing a product page cannot tell you. But comfort is less mysterious than it seems. A handful of details predict it well, and most good listings include them.

Start with how you sleep

Your sleep position decides how high the pillow should be, which matters more than almost anything else.

  • Side sleepers need the most height and a firmer feel to fill the gap between the ear and the shoulder, keeping the neck in line with the spine.
  • Back sleepers do best with medium height that supports the curve of the neck without tipping the chin toward the chest.
  • Stomach sleepers need the thinnest, softest option, or sometimes no pillow at all, to avoid bending the neck backward.
  • Combination sleepers who switch all night usually prefer an adjustable pillow.

Solid or shredded foam?

A solid block of memory foam, often shaped with a contour, holds its form and gives steady support. It suits people who want the same feel every night. Shredded foam is made of many small pieces inside a cover. You can usually unzip it and remove fill to lower the height, and it can be fluffed into shape, which makes it the safer pick if you are unsure.

Read the labels that matter

Look for independent certifications for foam content and emissions, such as CertiPUR-US for foams made in the United States. Check whether the cover is removable and machine washable. If you tend to sleep hot, look for ventilated foam, gel infusions or a breathable cotton cover, and pair the pillow with breathable sheets.

Expect a short break-in

New memory foam can feel firm at first and may carry a mild smell when unboxed. Let it air out for a day in a ventilated room, and give yourself about a week to adjust before deciding. Your neck is used to your old pillow, so the first night is rarely the best judge.

Check the return policy first

Pillows are personal, and many sellers restrict returns on bedding for hygiene reasons. Before you check out, read the return terms so you know exactly what happens if the fit is wrong.

Get the height right, pick the fill that matches how much control you want, and you will be much closer to waking up without a stiff neck.
